The Questions & Other Dumb Things

  • When did you know?

  • Who is the man in the relationship?

  • When will you grow out of this phase?

  • God did not make Adam and Steve

  • Can I watch?

  • How will will you make children?

  • Who's on top?

  • Doesn’t it hurt, you know s.x?

All these statements plus many more are common questions asked to gay men. Would you ever ask your straight friend those questions?

Why It Hurts:

  • Everyday comments add up: Imagine constant, even small, negative messages about yourself. It takes a toll.

  • They dismiss experiences: Comments that question someone's identity or reality can be very invalidating.

  • They reinforce hurtful stereotypes: Casual jokes can normalize assumptions that can be harmful.

Moving Beyond the Script:

  • Learn and listen: Take the time to understand the impact of your words. Ask questions and hear stories.

  • Acknowledge and apologize: If you realize a comment hurt someone, own up to it and try to understand why.
